The XMLCommand plugin for Adobe creates a close integration between Adobe InDesign and the Java-based censhare Client. This integration allows you to edit Adobe InDesign documents directly in censhare. A guide through the installation of the XMLCommand plugin.

Prepare

To prepare for the installation:

  • Check the Adobe plugin compatibility tables, before updating to a new version of Adobe InDesign, InCopy, or InDesign Server. Ensure that the censhare version and XMLCommand plugin that you use, support the desired Adobe version.

  • Install the new version of Adobe InDesign, InCopy, or InDesign Server if needed.

Version parity

We strongly recommend that you use the same plugin version on all your workstations and InDesign server. Using different plug-ins and clients on the same files can cause unexpected results.

Windows 64-bit

Starting with Adobe CS6 for Windows, you must install the correct 64-bit plugin for InDesign Server. Rendering in 32-bit Windows is no longer possible for CS6 and CC versions. Make sure that you install all available Adobe updates. The censhare plugins expect the appropriate Adobe versions.

Download

  1. Go to the ecosphere tracker support system, or log into the censhare Client and select Stored searches | _Downloads | censhare-downloads | PlugIns.
  2. Download the censhare plugin (DMG for macOS, ZIP for Windows ) directly from the Download folder. Otherwise, the plugin might not be installed correctly.

Install

For detailed installation information, see the _Downloads |censhare-downloads | PlugIns folder.

32-bit plugin versions: As of Adobe 2020, no 32-bit plugin versions are available anymore.

  1. Based on your operating system, select the Mac or Windows folder. There, expand the respective PlugIns folder and select the desired Adobe plugin distribution.
There are separate distributions for Adobe InDesign Desktop and Adobe InDesign Server.

  2. In the Adobe plugin distribution folder, select and download the archive for the desired XMLCommand plugin. Use the client system requirements to determine which plugin version you need.

  3. On the destination computer, unpack the archive of the downloaded XMLCommand plugin.

  4. Go to the folder where you downloaded the archive. For example, Application /Adobe InDesign 2021/PlugIns. Usually, the PlugIns folder is automatically created when you install the Adobe application. If not, create the PlugIns folder in this location.

Since Adobe CC 2015 version 11.4, all native Adobe plug-ins are stored directly inside the Adobe application bundle. So you do not find any native Adobe plug-ins in the mentioned Plug-Ins folder.
  5. In the PlugIns folder, create a censhare subfolder.

  6. Place the files of the XMLCommand plugin in the censhare subfolder.
    For example, Mac/Applications/Adobe InDesign 2021/PlugIns/censhare/censhare-XMLCommand-2021-InDesignPlugin, censhare-XMLCommand-2021-UI.InDesginPlugin .

Before you roll out a new plug-in, test the plug-in on the customers' test environments.

Test the setup

To test the plugin after installation or having copied the files to the destination folder:

  1. Open Adobe InDesign.
  2. Create a new layout. An empty page is sufficient.
  3. In the censhare Client, select the menu File/Interfaces/Adobe InDesign online.
  4. If the installation was successful, the censhare InDesign palette displays.
  5. Click the + icon and select New layout.
  6. Specify a name and click OK to save your edits.
  7. Search for the name within censhare to locate and open the Layout asset. The new layout is not displayed automatically in an asset query.
