How to check the InDesign Server version

Problem

You may need to know the Adobe InDesign server version if, for instance:

  • You get an error caused by the version incompatibility from a job sent to the InDesign server;
  • You suspect an InDesign bug on a specific Adobe release;
  • You have many InDesign servers and want to get information about all installed versions at once.

But you do not have an opportunity to access the Render Client.

Solution

You can check the InDesign server versions using a server action in the Admin Client. You will get a list of combinations of an InDesign server and a Render Client, i.e., the Layout Service instances, grouped by the version of the InDesign server for your convenience. See an example below.

Prerequisites

  • This feature works properly for the latest censhare Server and Render Client versions.
    • While you can use this action with an older Render Client, keep in mind that no details about the versions of the InDesign server, Plugin, and Render Client will be available.
  • You need administrator permissions.
  • The Render Clients must have an active connection to the censhare Server at the moment of retrieving the information. Only the InDesign servers that are connected to the active Render Clients will be shown. If a censhare Render Client is currently offline, the corresponding Layout Service instances won't be listed.

How to enable

You can enable this server action in the Admin Client, under Configuration → Modules → Renderer.

Steps

In the Admin Client,

  • go to the Server actions
  • select List Adobe InDesign Servers

For each Layout Service instance, the dialogue displays versions of the Adobe InDesign server, the censhare Plugin, and the censhare Render Client.
